Opal Sock Yarn in Fingering AND Sport Weight! Yarn Folk

Will you be joining us for Elfin Madness and a holiday open house this Saturday?

To remind you, if you'd like to swap an elf or gnome, please drop one (or more if you like) off by this Wednesday, the 13th, and we'll redistribute them on Saturday, the 16th, between 9am and 1pm. We'll have a few holiday treats for a low-key gathering.

The elf and gnome swap operates on a one in, one out principle. But even if swapping was not in the cards for you this year, we'd love to see you! Social Stitching will be held from 2-4pm as well.

Social Stitching

Every Saturday, 2-4pm

A reminder--if you're feeling poorly, please join us again as soon as you're feeling better!

Elfin Madness

Now through December 13th

We're hosting an elf and gnome swap to celebrate the winter holidays with our fiber friends. Sign up here. The event operates on a make one / take one principle, and submissions must be received in person or by mail at Yarn Folk no later than December 13th. We will assemble mystery packages and you can pick up your new pal in person at our Holiday Swap Party on the 16th. If you're unable to attend, we'll hold your mystery package for you, or mail it if needed.

This is an idea I've had bouncing around for a couple of years--I hope you'll participate! Sign up form is here, and a Ravelry bundle of pattern ideas is here.

Holiday Swap Party

Saturday, December 16th, any time between 9a-1p.

We'll have holiday refreshments, and if you participated in the elf and gnome swap, you'll be able to pick up your secret package! (But stop by for some holiday cheer even if you aren't participating in the exchange.)

Coming in January

Sweater Knitalong / Crochetalong

We'll be announcing the theme shortly, and our official start date will be January 13th. We'll continue through February!

Holiday Hours

December 25 -- Closed for Christmas

January 1 -- 9a - 3:30p

January 8-10 -- Closed for annual planning

Weather Delay

In the ten years we've been open, we've had *very* few unscheduled closures. That said, our hours are sometimes affected, and here's how we try to keep you posted:

  • We update our hours in Google. Sometimes they don't approve the update as fast as we'd like, but we do make every effort to post any changes there.
  • We make social media posts on Facebook and Instagram, and share those posts to our stories. If you happen to see a post, please like or share it--it really helps to get the word out when there is more interaction.
  • If we have access to the shop phone, we update the outgoing message.
  • Please remember that we travel from Upper County, and sometimes conditions there are very different.

…new in the shop

We've just received a shipment of one of my all-time favorite self-patterning sock yarns, Opal Sockenwolle from Germany. I have a pair of socks I still wear on a regular basis that I made 15-20 years ago, and I've mended them very minimally (and not that long ago). We have the Winterweide (Winter Pasture) collection from Opal's Schafpate series, where a portion of the proceeds go to protect German migratory sheep farming. This collection is a fingering weight sock yarn, and as I've suggested, it's terrifically durable, and also lovely to knit with. (It's great for other accessories, too.)
And we also have the 6-ply (sport weight) in the Passion collection, if you're looking for a slightly beefier, but still comfortable-to-wear sock. This is also a nice choice for wooly baby and kid things, as it holds up well to machine washing and drying.

…to inspire

My friend Lucinda Iglesias released her pattern for the HélioTRIP Cowl, and I'm excited to cast one on using Zauberball Crazy and two strands of Berroco Aerial. Why haven't I cast one on already, you might ask? Um, see below.

Oops, I decided to start a Christmas sweater. I'm making the Hreindyr sweater from Lopi. I like Lopi at a fairly airy gauge, so I'm using 5.5mm (US 9) needles, with garnet as the main color, and light beige, pine, and chocolate as the contrasting colors. It's moving along pretty quickly, and true to form, once I finished my first ball of garnet used on the body, I switched to the sleeves. And since this sweater is knit circularly from the bottom up, almost all of the fun bits are at the end, *plus* you're decreasing stitches, which makes for a fast and fun finish.
