Last call: Marie Greene at Yarn Folk this weekend!

October 07, 2025

Our weekend event with Marie Greene of Olive Knits is almost here, and we'd love to welcome you, too!

Friday evening is an after-hours event, 5pm-7:30pm, which include a swag bag, and informal talk, refreshments, and early access to the Tributary Yarns trunk show.

Saturday, you can combine Marie's 10:30am with a private shopping appointment, where she can help you think about yarn choices for a project you've been dreaming of.

There's also a book signing from 11am-noon. There's no cost for the book signing, and Marie would be delighted to sign any of her previous books, as well.

More details at the sign-up link here!

…new in the shop

Despite a series of shipping hassles, I did manage to wrest some yarn from FedEx last week.

Meet Morris:

New from West Yorkshire Spinners, Morris is a classic DK yarn in a palette curated to pay homage to textile designer, poet, and artist William Morris. This blend of Bluefaced Leicester, Bluefaced Kerry Hill, and Masham wool  is quintessentially British, and the color range evokes Victorian England. Colorwork anyone? (PS, you could Doodle to your heart's desire with this yarn.)

Also new to the shelves is Lang Infinity, and extrafine Merino single ply worsted weight. This is an incredibly colorful yarn without any repeat--the same colors appear again and again, but their order and the length of the color are randomized. The yardage is super generous: 284 yards in a 100g skein. Just two balls will make the Zorya crochet scarf, and it would be an amazing contrast color in many of Andrea Mowry's patterns.

…to inspire

I wanted to share a couple of treasures that came into my life last week.

First is a bovine bone crochet hook that dates to the 1800s. Bone was a popular material for crochet hooks beginning in the nineteenth century, and it was the main material used by CJ Bates until the middle of the twentieth century. (CJ Bates was later rebranded as Susan Bates, and was eventually purchased by Coats & Clark.) This hook is approximately a US C / 2.75mm hook, and is shorter than most hooks we use today.

Then there is this darning gourd, dating from roughly the same period. It's slightly smaller than a conventional lightbulb, virtually weightless, and very strong. I've never seen a gourd used this way, and I'm now fighting the urge to plant lots of gourds!
