Last Call for Patty Lyons Build a Better Fabric Class!

Our Zoom class with Patty Lyons is next Wednesday (a week from tomorrow), 10/16 from 4-6pm, and if you've been waiting to sign up, NOW IS THE TIME.

Patty is an engaging and enthusiastic teacher, with a gift for getting to the WHY of what makes a pleasing fabric. Many of us are taught a way of working our stitches, and we don't always understand the impact of how we do things like use our needles, tension our yarn, or interact with the mount of our stitches. Patty looks at those details, and communicates our options in a way that empowers knitters. People who have taken her class express so much excitement about increasing their understanding of what the heck is going on with their knitting!

The class is $49.99, and is a LIVE Zoom class on October 16, from 4-6pm PDT (7-9pm EDT). Register here: https://yarnfolk.com/products/class-with-patty-lyons-build-a-better-fabric

PLEASE NOTE: whether you are already registered, or are signing up now, you will need to complete the separate Zoom registration link sent to you after enrolling! As of Sunday, we had less than 50% of the students enrolled who had completed that step!

…new in the shop

I had to take a look around the shop to see what has arrived, but that I didn't have enough space to highlight!

First up, we restocked our 11th Anniversary colorway from Urth Yarns, Eleven. The grey is a little more solid in this batch than the first, but it was dyed to the same recipe, and we're happy to have more on hand! We also ordered some other self striping colorways in Uneek Fingering, and you can find those here. We're at a bit of a crossroads--our favorite self-striping sock dyer, Knitterly Things, opened a yarn shop in Michigan! She will be continuing to do wholesale dyeing, but she's a little busy! She knows we are ready to restock, but at the moment, we're down to just a few skeins of Vesper, so we've augmented our selection with the Uneek Fingering. (And we also have Zauberball Crazy and Opal 4-Ply and 6-Ply self-striping and self-patterning yarns + West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4-Ply in this year's holiday colorway, Yuletide.)

We also restocked some items from Katrinkles, including our Yarn Folk Needle & Hook Gauge, the Casting On Markers, Adjustable Sock Blockers, and a new set of Yarn Chicken markers. (🐔!!)

Last, but not least, we have the brand-new Patty Lyons' Knitting Bag of Tricks: The Official Workbook. Designed as a hands-on companion to the original Knitting Bag of Tricks book, the Official Workbook gives you a place to record your progress as you practice techniques. (And as a reminder, orders containing books only are eligible for less expensive Media Mail shipping.)

…to inspire

So, about our temporary schedule October 14-17. Last Friday, my father, Hugh Miner, Jr. passed away after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's Disease. It was a long, slow decline, but my sister and I were fortunate to have the staff at the Central Nebraska VA Home to help us spend time with him via FaceTime every Friday.

My dad retired from Fonner Park in 2015, after 45 years of service. Fonner Park was originally a thoroughbred horse racing track, and under his leadership, it expanded into the community events center he always believed it should be. In 2010, the Nebraska State Fair relocated there because the facilities could support a 10 day fair welcoming around 315,000 visitors in a location more accessible to the entire state than the previous site, Lincoln, had been.

My dad taught me much of what I know about hard work and determination. From the time I was a little girl, I liked to tag along with him to the post office to collect his work mail. Like me, my dad worked a lot of weekend hours over the years. Many of his former employees say that he was the best boss they ever had--his standards were high, but he was there beside them, putting in the kind of effort he expected from others. And at the same time, he made sure he was there for his family.

The photo above was taken when my son Zay was about three. Zay will be here between his classes next week while I am traveling back to Nebraska for my dad's memorial service. He has been helping me in the shop with receiving and a variety of other daily tasks, and I will be leaving him some guides to help him help you find options for your projects.  Except for Tuesday, he will have access to me by phone for most of the time I am away. This is a hard time of year to be away, and I really appreciate his willingness to step in to keep the business open for part of the time I am absent.

...currently stitching

Mastiha, from Thea Colman, in Seis Cabos is nearly impossible to put down. This cardigan is worked from the bottom up in a pattern with migrating two-stitch cables, and I'm close to starting the v-neck shaping. I'll need to decide on an in-flight project this week, as the sweater may be a little unwieldy by the time I leave on Sunday.
