January Sweater Makealong Theme Inside!

December 26, 2023

January-Sweater-Makealong-Theme-Inside Yarn Folk

The theme for January's sweater makealong is: Scandi Design. As always, our guidelines are flexible--if you want to participate, there's probably a way we can include your project. The main criteria are:

  • It is a sweater project. (Adult? Yes, of course. Child or baby? Sure. Dog? Eh, why not. Feet? Um, nope, those are socks. Great project; not this makealong.)
  • Your project incorporates some element of Scandinavian design. More on that in our "to inspire" section, below.
  • Some portion of your materials should be sourced from Yarn Folk.

The makealong will start January 13th, and continue through the end of February. If there is interest, we may schedule some Zoom check-ins for early Sunday afternoons. There is no requirement that you finish your project.

For our purposes here, we'll be going with the broader definition of Scandinavia, which includes Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland. (Finland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland aren't always included.)

January is a great time for fresh starts, and there's nothing quite like casting on for a new project with friends! See below for some possible ways to interpret our theme.

Coming in January

Sweater Makealong

Our official start date will be January 13th, and we'll continue through February.

Holiday Hours

January 1 -- 9a - 3:30p (note the later opening time)

January 8-10 -- Closed for annual planning

Weather Delay

In the ten years we've been open, we've had *very* few unscheduled closures. That said, our hours are sometimes affected, and here's how we try to keep you posted:

  • We update our hours in Google. Sometimes they don't approve the update as fast as we'd like, but we do make every effort to post any changes there.
  • We make social media posts on Facebook and Instagram, and share those posts to our stories. If you happen to see a post, please like or share it--it really helps to get the word out when there is more interaction.
  • If we have access to the shop phone, we update the outgoing message.
  • Please remember that we travel from Upper County, and sometimes conditions there are very different.

…new in the shop

We got a new shipment of Woobles in right before Christmas, and we have a few kits left if you or someone you know is an aspiring crocheter with holiday gift money to spend!
We also did a quiet restock of many of our Berroco yarns, including Vintage, Vintage Baby, and Ultra Wool!

Some possibilities for interpreting our sweater makealong theme:

Autumn Alpine photo © Caitlin Hunter

Choose a pattern from a Scandinavian designer. Filtered Ravelry search here.

Use a pattern tagged with design elements from one of the Scandinavian countries. Filtered Ravelry search here.

Use a Scandinavian yarn. We have Tukuwool Fingering and Léttlopi at Yarn Folk. If you would like to use a different weight of Lopi, we can drop ship through Berroco.

Use a pattern with a Scandinavian style stranded colorwork motif. I'm planning to start the Autumn Alpine sweater from Boyland Knitworks in Tukuwool Fingering.

Try a soft neutral scheme that evokes Scandinavian interior design, or other colors that are often represented: pale blue, forest green, burnt orange, dusty pink...

Use mohair carried along with another yarn--a technique often used by Scandinavian designers. Filtered Ravelry search here.yarnfolk dividing line (2).png

So close. I would have finished the Hreindyr sweater if I hadn't run out of one of the colors of yarn. If I lived closer to the store, I *definitely* would have gone to get some, but as it is, I'll have to be content with finishing in the next day or two. Drat!
