Have your-elf a festive exchange with your gnomies--time to sign up for our annual Elf & Gnome Swap!

November 11, 2025

Have your-elf a festive exchange with your gnomies--time to sign up for our annual Elf & Gnome Swap!

Toward the end of this week, we will be pulling out holiday decorations for the store. There are at least a couple of elves and gnomes in the mix, and the fun of making something that doesn't take much time or yarn but delivers big on whimsy is what inspired this annual event!

Whether you are a knitter or a crocheter, we would love for you to join in! There are plenty of patterns for either craft. (We have gathered a few suggestions here.) Color combos are endless! Any of the patterns can be made with any weight of yarn, so long as you use a smaller needle or hook than you would normally use (so that the stuffing doesn't peek through).

Sign up for the exchange here!

…mark your calendars

…new in the shop

1) DMC Six-Ply Embroidery Floss now available! Thank goodness I only need to set it up once!

2) New Yarn Folk mugs are here! After selling out of the original style (ordering in bulk is no joke), I was on a mission to find a worthy replacement. Introducing the Yarn Folk Campfire Mugs: a little shorter and wider, but still a generous 14oz—no thimble-sized beverages here! They’re deep crimson inside and out with a classic splatterware look and a gold wraparound design. Available now in-store, and shipping will open when boxes arrive. Dishwasher safe, though handwashing helps keep the logo looking sharp!

…to inspire

Have you needed a provisional cast on lately? This is an area of knitting where new techniques are making life easier! In this video, Ellen from The Chilly Dog demonstrates using a spare interchangeable cord to cast on provisional stitches; the exact same technique can be used with Purl Strings, allowing you to pull  a working needle through the provisional loops when you are ready for them. Using a crochet hook with waste yarn was my go-to for years, but the crochet chain only pulled out as expected part of the time. Give this a try, and let me know what you think!

(*We'll be getting more Purl Strings soon. They make a great stocking stuffer!)

...currently stitching

Mosspath is still a very dark black. Upper back and almost all of the upper right front are complete!

I am farther along on Andrea Mowry's Jaunty in Lang Infinity, and as the rows get longer, the stripes get denser. Because the sequencing and color lengths are randomized, every row is a surprise!

We are on the second clue of Joji Locatelli's One Love Mystery Shawl, which is currently alternating garter stitch sections with feather and fan lace. I should be done with Clue 2 before the next one is released!
